Range of Motion After Knee Replacement Surgery: What to Expect

Pre-Post Surgery | July 28, 2025

Overview

Range of motion is one of the most tracked metrics in knee replacement recovery. Learn the typical milestones, why early progress matters, and what the numbers mean for daily life.

Range of motion (ROM) — how far your knee bends and straightens — is one of the most closely tracked measures after knee replacement. It matters because everyday activities have specific ROM requirements: walking on level ground uses about 65 degrees of flexion, climbing stairs about 85-105 degrees, and rising from a low chair around 105 degrees or more.

Typical recovery goals include reaching roughly 90 degrees of flexion in the early weeks and progressing toward 110-120 degrees or more over the following months, along with full or near-full extension. Individual results vary widely based on pre-surgical motion, swelling, pain management, and consistency with exercises.

The early weeks matter most. Scar tissue forms quickly after surgery, and motion gained early is easier to keep than motion recovered later. This is why physical therapists emphasize bending and straightening exercises from the very first days, even when they're uncomfortable.

If progress stalls, tell your care team early. Options range from adjusted therapy programs to, in a small minority of cases, procedures to address stiffness. Consistent communication with your therapist and surgeon — supported by objective progress tracking where available — gives you the best chance of a functional, comfortable knee.

Key Takeaways

  • Daily activities require specific flexion ranges — stairs need ~85-105 degrees
  • Early motion is easier to gain than motion recovered later
  • Both flexion and full extension matter for normal walking
  • Report stalled progress to your care team promptly
